THE KWAZULU-NATAL SOUTH COAST

With wave upon wave of Cape cold fronts sweeping up the coast to cool our winter ocean followed by the resurgence of the warm Mozambique current during summer, KwaZulu-Natal abounds with a stunning variety of different fish species.

Likewise our easily accessible coastline offers anglers an infinite variety of places from which to fish. You can choose from rock, to surf, to piers, jetties, estuaries, lagoons and for those lucky enough to access a boat, our numerous offshore reefs dish up their own special fare.

During the May – September winter months the prominent rock and surf species are Salmon, Garrick and Galjoen, while in summer (October – February) the fun turns to Kingfish, Queenfish, King Mackerel (called ‘Couta’ locally), Queen Mackerel (Snoek), Surgeon and Grunter.

The delectable Shad season runs from 1 December to 31 August and offers great light-tackle enjoyment all along the coast. For that special breed, Shark Fishermen, the KZN South Coast has twenty different species against which to test your wits and strength.

Then, of course, each June there is “The Greatest Shoal on Earth” … our internationally renowned annual sardine run. A time when shoals measuring several kilometres wide by tens of kilometres long travel up our coastline, creating the Mother of all Feeding Frenzies by the accompanying game fish, gulls, gannets and humans alike. Yes, wonderful fishing experiences await you along our shore, but note that you are required to carry a licence which can be purchased at any local Post Office.
